Winged Warriors

Results against Sword of Laban

Uncertainty can be found at the beginning of any of our clanmatches. Especially in this clanmatch because we knew little about our adversaries; the Sword of Laban. The only exposure we had came from some matchmaking games played with them a few weeks before the match. However, it wasn't long before we learned that the Sword of Laban is an sharp blade with aggressive tactics and efficient strategies.

  • This clanmatch started on Tuesday, June 13th at 10:30pm central time.
  • The total match duration including lobby time was 1hr 10min.
  • There were a total of 5 games played in this match (2 CTF, 1 Oddball & 2 Slayer).
  • 10 players participated; 5 represented the Winged Warriors, 5 represented the Sword of Laban.

Game I: MLG CTF Classic on Midship - To Our Surprise

The game started and the Winged Warriors rushed two players on either side of this small arena like map. With so many players outside of our base Sword of Laban took advantage and quickly captured the Winged Warriors' flag two times. I took us a while, but we were able to recover and suppress Sword of Laban long enough to gain control of the map. The map control we now possessed combined with a few well executed four-man attacks aided by covering fire from our fifth man led to a tied game with both teams having two points. What followed was a long and tedious stalemate with both teams trading kills and map control back and forth with no results. This continued until the Winged Warriors played an incredible over-the-top flag capture that gave them the lead. This flag capture however, seemed to sharpen the blade on the Sword of Laban offense. They attacked with renewed force and pinned us down in what felt like a rush of anger.
The game ended in the same way it began with Sword of Laban making quick, back to back flag captures. The results of this game seemed unjust to the Winged Warriors as the stats showed a mere eight kill difference between the two teams; but it was Sword of Laban that showed us how resolved they were.

Game II: 1 Flag CTF on Terminal - A Close Call

Our first game wasn't a complete loss because we knew now what we were up against. For the second game we settled in an prepared for a long fight.

For the first round we had our turn as the team defending the flag. The enemy brought an aggressive and constant wave of attacks, and despite their best efforts we held them off for the majority of the round. Near the end with their endeavor growing desparate, the SoL team snagged our flag from our base and ran into theirs. We were able to put them at a standstill just before they captured the flag; but as time went on their home field advantage gave them enough nearby spawns to overtake our defenders and score.
The second round round wasn't too pretty. Our plan backfired upon us and put us at an immediate disadvantage. Our misfire combined with consistent defense from the Sword of Laban kept us from scoring.
In the third round the Winged Warriors were back on defense and knew what to expect from the Sword's Offense. They brought the same aggressive playstyle from the first round. This time we were prepared and waited with our finger ready on the trigger. After many violent attempts the SoL blade was finally able to pull the flag all the way back to their base. We knew that this was the time to make a stand, and we knew that we had to prevent them from gaining a second capture and subsequent victory. As our resolve surfaced we dug in, fought off the SoL attack, and successfully thwarted the enemy's flag capture despite their home field advantage.
It was the fourth and final round and our last chance at offense, our last chance to stop defeat. The Winged Warriors blitzed straight for their wraith. Soon after the destruction of their wraith bart 008 grabbed the enemy's flag and ran home for the capture, however, the SoL team regrouped and stopped him dead in his tracks, inches away from the capture point. The Sword fought relentlessly with snipers, a ghost, and the newly spawned wraith. As the war was raging Pastemaster ran for the rockets in hope of turning the tides of battle. He ran uncontested and was able to successfully destroy both the wraith and the ghost. Our team slaughtered what was left of the Sword of Laban effort which allowed bart 008 to finish what he started by capturing the flag and tying the game.

Game III: MLG Team Slayer on Lockout - Defeat Taste Like Salt

Team Slayer on Lockout brings hope to the eyes of any Winged Warrior. Our preliminary strategy for this game is one that we've spent a great deal of time preparing. As such, we went into this game with one loss, one tie and confident hope for a comeback.

At the beginning of the game we spawned in the blue room underneath the lift, and the SoL squad spawned at the main tower. Then the Sword team immediately took a defensive posistion in almost the exact way we planned to. After our first failed attack to claim the tower, Vuel Egham grabbed the shotgun, and EARLYheadSHOT acquired the sniper rifle. With the superb sniping skill of EARLYheadSHOT, and the deadly shotgun of Vuel Egham the Warriors were denied from ever conquering the main tower. This led to our team losing to the Sword of Laban by a large margin of 22 kills, which was one more step toward victory for the Sword of Laban.
After the game we found out that SoL shared our confidence on this gametype, and never expected to lose. Truth Seeker led the SoL with 13 kills and 4 deaths while in pale comparison bart 008 led the Winged Warriors with 9 kills and 13 deaths.

Game IV: MLG Oddball on Midship - How Does Your Own Medicine Taste?

We went into the forth game down two games to none with a tie on the side. Knowing from the first game that the real Sword of Laban on Midship was their kill first ask questions later strategy we changed our plan to match theirs and go head to head in an all out war.
The game was neck and neck the whole way through. The Warriors would kill a few SoL members and pick up the ball at every chance we got. The SoL team would kill all Winged Warriors at times but failed to gain time with the ball when they had the advantage. Because of our change in strategy the game was tilted heavily toward slaying and not so much towards the ball. This is evident in the kills: the Winged Warriors had 176 total kills and the Sword of Laban racked up 194. Because of our ability to change strategies in-between games the Winged Warriors won the game with a twenty-eight second lead.

Game V: Team Slayer on Ivory Tower - Please Sir May I Have Another

The fifth game was a split choice; meaning that we chose the gametype to be 'WW Team Slayer 100' and the SoL squad chose Ivory tower for the map. We rushed the overshield ramp to take control of the overshield spawn and SoL charged the top in order to control the sniper rifle. After game five was all said and done, four of the Sword of Laban members racked up more than 20 kills, while four of our warriors had more than 20 deaths.
Our strategy worked and we were able to control the overshield, but the SoL was able to control the rocket launcher and the sniper rifle. The combination of the two powerful weapons proved to be more harmful than control of the overshield was protective. In the end the Sword of Laban won by a margin of 35 kills, sealing their win in this five game series.

Match Summary

One of the first clanmatches we've had that came down to the last game, the Sword of Laban pulled away with a three to one lead. This clanmatch was one the most intense collection of games we've played in a while. We look forward to playing a rematch against this talented team, because they put us to the test in every match, showing us that we may need to rethink and rework our slaying skill. In the mean time you can find us scrimmaging with them to help perfect our strategies. -Pastemaster & Night Rider 7
