We were silent for so many months, like a slumbering bear, and our forest had forgotten who owned the night. During four long months the Warriors rebuilt and reorganized as veterans had long absences and recruits were trained and cut repeatedly. Finally, the work was complete and we, the Winged Warriors, were ready and awake, hunting again. Our first opponent since December of 2007 was We're Not Godz. A best of five match with three games chosen by WNGz and two by the Warriors.

In our initial scout of WNGz, we discovered two troubling pieces of information: They had never lost their first chosen game type (Low King on Guardian), and they had played this game type against several quality opponents. Guardian plays like a small map in a lot of ways, one of those ways being King games, and this match was eight v. eight. As "black screen" flared to life, Griffin team leader, MASbetty described best what was about to come, "This is gonna be a shitstorm." The game raged back and forth with predictable swings in lead and momentum. WNGz was very good at landing all of their team in the hill together creating massive gaps in leads. It made for a stressful situation when you constantly see their lead jump high. But in the end this strength turned out to be their weakness as almost their entire team gathered in the hill when it was on elbow and MASbetty and bart 008 gathered an Overkill to finish off their whole team. Our last low players took all their time and we closed out the game. We handed WNGz their first defeat in Low King ever.

Next came Multi-Flag on Avalanche where the Warriors had practiced thoroughly over the past several weeks. With a decisive rush in the first three minutes the Warriors capped a flag quickly and maintained their defense right after. For the next seventeen minutes each team traded flag steals and returns over and over again, but our new recruits and strong practice proved enough to push back and hold for a victory. Warriors win Multi-Flag and go up 2-0.

Last Resort, like its predecessor Zanzibar, is a great map in many ways. Its verticality and great variety of long, mid, and short range game play are hallmarks of a great Halo map. But Last Resort also inherited the one major flaw of Zanzibar, one flag games lean to the offense a little too much. So, with no real tiebreaker round built-in, both teams capped in both rounds and the result was a very uncommon tie during a competitive match. In the end, this was about as satisfying as Phantom Needlers on Waterworks, and less decisive. Warriors still up two games to none.

Like most great stories ours has a twist. Around 9:10 or so one of our new recruits experienced a total power failure in his neighborhood and his box shut off. For a moment we all thought it was a dropped connection and WNGz patiently waited for him to sign back on to Live, but that never happened. After receiving a phone call explaining the situation Pastemaster decided to play the rest of the match a man down. Now to be clear and fair, WNGz did offer to remove one of their players and were very honorable opponents in that way, but many of our members felt that it was our fault for not having the players and therefore we would play handicapped the rest of the match. This proved to be the nail in the coffin of a horrific defeat. We started with strong intentions and good strategy, take the middle and laser, control the high ground, rotate a hog and capture team around the map as we slowly dominate. WNGz had other plans though and illustrated them to us with cold indifference. We literally had every break go their way and on top of that they were just out playing us. After a one capture offense and 4 capture defense we were emotionally broken, we assumed the match was turning to their favor and our man down was to be our undoing. Soon it was over and we we're broken by it. A 2-7 defeat on our game type was almost too much to take and we looked towards Standoff Hill as our final stand.

There are two important things to do on all maps with laser and hogs and that is to control laser and hogs. This proved too much for us, Blue team, to do in the first rush and we failed to get a good start, one opponent went +25 with 43 total kills in a hog we should have stopped. Other problems we could never have planned for were: no time limit so we didn't know when the hill would move and laggy game play plagued our team so we used the player with the best connection to call out the score to the rest of us. As one player on WNGz said, "On my screen, we had a score of zero until the end." We seemed doomed, more than halfway through the game I Phade I told us that we were almost 40 points down, maybe the winter was too long for the slumbering Warriors. As we struggled in sprays dirt and scattered callouts, XXmrbenXX yelled through the chaos, "The hill is moving in 15 seconds!!" Startled by information we never expected to have we rushed to set up another player in the next spot right before it moved and succeeded. "How did you know that, Ben?" Isnagov yelled as we started to inch up our score. "My wife is timing it with our clock!" We laugh in surprise and joy as XXmrbenXX starts calling out hill move times through the end of the match with his wife's help. But the battle was still a losing effort, it seemed, when they captured our overturned hog and started circulating two hogs at once. It was destructive. Like spinning wheels of fire they rolled through our lines killing us before we even got close to the hill. But Warriors are born from less than this as Pastemaster valiantly stuck one hog taking it out as MASbetty snagged another and started a driving spree of revenge. Suddenly, our comeback was in sight as I Phade I started counting the points until we were tied. The sweet sound of "GAINED THE LEAD" sounded through our speakers and frenzied cheer sounded as we tried to hold our new place atop this game until the final seconds rolled down. Amid the lag no one could make out the last 20 seconds our so and we struggle hoping until the board popped up as "TIED" then "BLUE TEAM WINS!" Victory in the match and the battle had come in a true test of fire. Congratulations to the new recruits on proving their worth where it counts. We would like to extend special MVP honors to XXmrbenXX wife for being our hill timer, without her who knows what would have happened. And also, we are honoring MASbetty, Griffin team leader and Warrior veteran, for doing what he does best and turning the tide with his hog work at the end of the Standoff King game.
We would like to thank members of We're Not Godz for the fun and competitive match. We look forward to scheduling another match in the future.
